About U.M.A.R.

U.M.A.R. (United Muslim Americans of Richmond) is a new and developing association of Muslims from various masajid in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. Our membership reflects multiple generations and is comprised primarily of Muslims of African American descent, with a rich history in Richmond, Virginia.

Our story
U.M.A.R. evolved from "Breakfast With My Brother" gatherings to bridge gaps in community service and strengthen faith-based bonds. Rooted in Richmond's African American history, we unite professionals like doctors and lawyers to empower families through education, business, and civic engagement.

To establish “Breakfast With My Brother” gatherings to strengthen bonds of friendship. We aspire to benefit all by identifying and cultivating opportunities through our core initiatives
Our vision
To unite men and women of faith in Al-Islam, as modeled by the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), with a shared vision to work for the good of the Muslim community and all citizens of the greater Richmond, Virginia area.
Our Core Initiatives
Education
Education is central to personal growth and community advancement. U.M.A.R. promotes learning opportunities for youth and adults through workshops, discussions, and mentorship that support academic success, professional development, and Islamic understanding. Our goal is to equip individuals with knowledge that benefits both their families and the wider community.
Business
We support economic empowerment by connecting entrepreneurs, professionals, and small business owners within the community. Through mentorship, networking, and shared resources, U.M.A.R. works to strengthen families and neighborhoods by promoting sustainable business growth, ethical leadership, and financial literacy rooted in faith and responsibility.
Culture
U.M.A.R. celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Muslims in Richmond, particularly the deep history of African American Muslims in the region. We aim to preserve tradition while fostering unity across generations by creating spaces for dialogue, storytelling, and community gatherings that strengthen identity, belonging, and mutual understanding.
Civic Engagement
We encourage active participation in civic life as a means of service and advocacy. U.M.A.R. works to raise awareness around local issues, promote responsible citizenship, and build partnerships that uplift underrepresented neighborhoods. Through engagement and collaboration, we seek to contribute positively to the social and civic fabric of greater Richmond.
